Term insurance at 23: do you need it when you are single?

Agents love selling term plans to 23-year-olds with no dependents. Sometimes it is smart (cheap premiums, future insurability). Sometimes it is fear sales. Use a decision tree, not guilt.

Buy sooner if

  • Anyone depends on your income (parents, siblings, partner).
  • You have co-signed or large education/personal loans others would inherit pressure from.
  • You have health conditions in the family and want to lock insurability early.

Wait or skip for now if

No dependents, no serious liabilities, and buying term would delay your emergency fund. Pure term only — never ULIP or “investment + insurance” mashups sold as must-haves.

Common questions

Do I need term insurance at 23 if I am single?
Only if someone depends on your income or you have liabilities others would struggle with. Otherwise prioritise emergency fund; buy pure term when dependents exist.
Should I buy ULIP instead of term at a young age?
No. Buy pure term for protection and invest separately in low-cost funds.
