Roommate rent split: no more “bhai you pay extra”

Fair ways to split rent and utilities in Indian shared flats — by room size, attached bath, balcony, AC, and WFH — plus a simple written agreement template.

Rent and bills split karna hai, drama nahi. Shared flats go toxic when one person has the big room and everyone pays equal. Fix the math on day one.

A simple fair split

  • Base rent split by carpet area (or room rank: big / medium / small).
  • Attached bathroom or balcony: +5–15% for that person.
  • AC in one room: that person pays a fixed extra on electricity or a higher rent share.
  • Wi-Fi, maid, gas, OTT: equal — unless one person never uses them.

Write it down

One WhatsApp note is not enough. Save a shared doc: rent shares, due date, who pays the landlord, what happens if someone is travelling, and 30-day notice to leave. Update when someone new moves in.

The takeaway

If money fights do not stop after one calm reset, start planning your exit. Peace is part of rent.

Common questions

How do roommates split rent fairly?
Split by room size or rank, add a premium for attached bath or balcony, and share Wi-Fi/maid equally unless usage is clearly unequal.
Should rent splits be written down?
Yes — shares, due date, who pays the landlord, and notice period. Update when someone moves in or out.
