Wedding contribution pressure: how much to give without going broke

Salary-based rules for cash gifts and cousin wedding contributions in India — and scripts to say no when the ask is insane.

6 min read · Updated 3 July 2026

Cousin wedding season can demand a “contribution” that looks like a month of SIP. You can be generous without taking a personal loan for someone else’s sangeet.

Salary-linked caps (starting point)

  • Under ₹40k in-hand: small cash gift or group gift — skip performative amounts.
  • ₹40–80k: set a per-wedding max (e.g. 1–2% of monthly in-hand × a factor you choose) and stick to it.
  • Higher income: still use a cap. Unlimited family events will eat your goals.

Never borrow for gifts. If the only way to “show respect” is EMI, the culture is wrong — not you.

Common questions

How much should I give for a cousin’s wedding?
Set a personal cap based on in-hand income and stick to it. Group gifts are fine. Never take a loan for contributions.
