Hostel/PG food vs Swiggy: where your stipend disappears

30-day math on mess food vs delivery apps for Indian students and freshers — how many orders it takes to wipe a stipend and how to set a hard cap.

Mess food is boring. Swiggy is dopamine. On a stipend, dopamine wins until your UPI balance is a joke. Do the monthly math once.

Rough comparison

  • Mess / PG food: fixed, predictable, usually cheapest per meal.
  • Mix (mess + 8–10 orders/month): common compromise.
  • Delivery-heavy (1–2 orders/day): can exceed rent in some metros.

A rule that works

Set a max order count per month on payday (not “when I feel like it”). Track in notes. When the count hits zero, mess or cook. Your future SIP will not miss the third burger.

Common questions

How do I stop overspending on Swiggy?
Set a max order count on payday, track it, and default to mess or cooking when the count hits zero.
