UPI pe life chal raha hai — including dates. Splitting is normal. Awkward silence after the bill is optional if you have a script.

A sane monthly dating budget

Pick a fixed cap from your “wants” bucket (often 5–10% of in-hand on a tight salary). When it is gone, suggest free or cheap plans. That is not cheap — that is solvent.

Scripts that do not kill the vibe

  • First dates: “Want to split on UPI?” said casually while the bill is open.
  • Ongoing: alternate who pays, or settle weekly with one transfer.
  • Unequal incomes: proportional split (e.g. 60/40) agreed once, not renegotiated every dinner.

The takeaway

Do not put dates on BNPL or revolving credit. Romance financed at 30%+ interest is a red flag you are giving yourself.

Money red flags

They never offer to pay, pressure you into EMIs for gifts, hide debt, or shame you for budgeting. Leave the date — and maybe the person.

Common questions

How do I ask to split a bill on UPI?
Say it casually while the bill is open: “Want to split on UPI?” For ongoing dating, alternate or settle weekly.
Should I use BNPL for dates?
No. If it does not fit this month’s wants budget, choose a cheaper plan — do not finance romance at penalty rates.
