Credit card against FD: is a secured card worth it?

How FD-backed credit cards work in India, who should get one to build CIBIL, and the fees and habits that still matter.

No credit history? A card against FD is training wheels: you lock money, get a limit, and build repayment behaviour. It is not free money — the FD is collateral.

  • Good for: first card, thin file, rebuilding after a mistake.
  • Still required: pay full statement every month.
  • Watch: annual fees, low rewards, opportunity cost of locked FD.

Once you have 12 months of clean history, graduate to a better lifetime-free card and free the FD if the bank allows.

Common questions

Is a credit card against FD good for beginners?
Yes for building CIBIL if you pay the full bill every month. The FD is locked as collateral — it is not free credit.
